AWP National and member donations are providing the following opportunities for student and limited means members to attend AWP at reduced cost. Please note that you must be a member of AWP to take advantage of these savings; you can join with your registration. PLEASE: If you have assistance from your home institution, do not request duplicate support from AWP, so we can help as many attendees as possible.

Here are some options for AWP Members:

1. Volunteer for reduced registration fees

In exchange for four hours of your time during the conference, you can register at the volunteer registration fee of $30. Please note that the only way to register online as a volunteer is through one of the “student” membership selections.

• If you are currently a student or limited means member and you wish to take advantage of this option, enter the online registration site at “student member”. (Note: If you joined after August 1, 2008, you are considered a dues-paid member for 2009.)

 • If you are not yet a member, your fee of $45 includes your new membership (and a free New Members luncheon). When you register, select “new student member”. 

In addition, please contact Barbara Silver (bsilver@uri.edu), who will be coordinating these assignments.

2. Stay in a Scholarship Room.

AWP national will subsidize approximately half the cost of your room at the Newport Marriott. You will be asked to pay AWP-RI directly for your share of the costs. Only students and members of limited means can request this scholarship. However, if you are sharing a room with an AWP member, we can make arrangements to provide a subsidy for you.

• Shared bed, 3-4 per room: $25 per person per night.

• Nonshared bed, 2-3 per room: $50 per person per night.

If you do not have a roommate, or wish to link up with others, we can assign you. Please contact Cynthia Roberts (croberts@riawp.org), 401-277-5165, with the number of nights and shared/nonshared preference.

3. Travel Assistance

We do not yet have firm amounts for travel assistance, and cannot guarantee you will receive any. However, we would like to hear from students and limited means members if you need travel assistance. We will give priority to those who are presenting and those who are traveling by air. Send a note to Cynthia Roberts (above) with the cost of your fare, and we will distribute funds if/as they become available.
